Susan "Brynne" Long (2022-2023 David Center for the American Revolution Short-Term Fellow) is a fourth year doctoral candidate in the American Civilization program at the University of Delaware. Her dissertation looks at how American prisoner management evolved during the Revolution from a communal obligation to a centralized system operated by the Continental Army. She argues that the militarization of the war effort excluded civilians from participating in common defense, rendering the military of early America a progressively less democratic institution in the course of the eighteenth century.
