Indigenous Learning Forum: "La enseñanza del Zapoteco como segunda lengua." (Teaching Zapotec as a Second Language) with Rayo Cruz

Rayo Cruz es tesista de la Maestría en Lingüística Aplicada en la Universidad de Guadalajara, México. Como hablante del idioma Zapoteco, su principio y fundamento es la revitalización y fortalecimiento de su lengua y cultura. Ha sido profesor de Lengua Indígena y actualmente promueve el aprendizaje del Zapoteco como segunda lengua. Es director fundador del Colectivo Bëni Xidza, una iniciativa que busca visibilizar la lengua Zapoteca en internet.

The speaker will be Rayo Cruz. Rayo is a Master's student working on his thesis in Applied Linguistics at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. As a speaker of the Zapotec language, his guiding principles and foundation are the revitalization and strengthening of his language and culture. He has been an Indigenous language teacher and promotes the learning of Zapotec as a second language. He is the founding director of the Bëni Xidza Collective, an initiative that seeks to make the Zapotec language visible on the internet. Rayo Cruz will share about his experiences teaching Zapotec as a second language. Rayo has been offering Beginner Zapotec virtually since 2020. He will share about the challenges and learnings from this experience. There have been six cohorts of students, and he is preparing to teach a seventh.

En 2020 el colectivo Bëni Xidza, el CEUXHIDZA y SURCO AC, decidieron ofrecer un curso básico de zapoteco vía zoom que permitiera a los interesados conocer esta lengua y aprender las palabras y expresiones más básicas del zapoteco, sus características y su situación actual, así como sus retos en el mundo contemporáneo. Este curso consta de 20 sesiones de una hora; dos clases por semana. En total son 20 horas de capacitación donde los participantes interactúan con la lengua a través de diferentes actividades como juegos y canciones, así como el uso de herramientas interactivas en la web como kahoot, quizzlet, classroom, jamboard, etc.  Este curso se imparte dos veces al año: en primavera (febrero-mayo) y en otoño (agosto-diciembre). El horario y la fecha de las clases varían según el periodo, pero siempre se ajustan a la disponibilidad de los participantes. El curso está abierto al público en general y está diseñado para adultos que deseen aprender zapoteco como segunda lengua. Las clases también se graban en YouTube para que los participantes puedan repasar o ponerse al día si se pierden alguna sesión.

Esta iniciativa ha tenido una buena respuesta de parte del público. Sin embargo, también implica muchos desafíos, pues el Zapoteco en tanto lengua oprimida y minorizada no cuenta con recursos didácticos para su enseñanza y aprendizaje como segunda lengua. Tampoco como lengua materna. Hay algunos materiales aislados y marginales que se han creado en diferentes espacios y momentos, pero no siempre corresponde con el Didza Xidza, la lengua Zapoteca que se enseña en este curso. Como se sabe, el Zapoteco es un grupo de idiomas por lo que un material creado en el Istmo de Tehuantepec no es funcional para la enseñanza y aprendizaje del Zapoteco de la Sierra. Esto crea problemas tanto para el profesor como también para el alumno. El profesor carece de recursos para enseñar el idioma y el estudiante también carece de materiales que le permitan practicar, estudiar de forma autónoma y seguir desarrollando el dominio de la lengua meta.

A pesar de las dificultades que implica la enseñanza del Zapoteco como segunda lengua, el Curso Básico de Zapoteco se ha mantenido durante tres años. Hasta el momento han egresado 150 estudiantes del primer nivel. Este año se lanzó el segundo nivel para que los estudiantes puedan dar continuidad a su aprendizaje del Zapoteco. También se está planeando lanzar (en el largo plazo) un curso virtual que se pueda estudiar de forma independiente. Además, se están elaborando materiales didácticos y recursos para enseñar y para aprender. Este curso se ha convertido en una de las pocas o nulas opciones para aprender Zapoteco y también uno de los pocos espacios donde se puede desarrollar la habilidad de enseñarlo y adquirir experiencia como profesor de Zapoteco como segunda lengua.

In 2020 the Bëni Xidza collective, the CEUXHIDZA and SURCO AC, decided to offer a basic Zapotec course via zoom that would allow those interested to get to know this language and learn the most basic words and expressions of Zapotec, its characteristics and current situation, as well as its challenges in the contemporary world. This course consists of 20 one-hour sessions; two classes per week. In total there are 20 hours of training where participants interact with the language through different activities such as games and songs, as well as the use of interactive tools on the web such as kahoot, quizzlet, classroom, jamboard, etc.  This course is given twice a year: in spring (February-May) and in autumn (August-December). The schedule and dates of the classes vary according to the period but are always adjusted to the availability of the participants. The course is open to the public and is designed for adults who wish to learn Zapotec as a second language. Classes are also recorded on YouTube so that participants can review or catch up if they miss a session.

This initiative has had a good response from the public. However, it also involves many challenges, since Zapotec as an oppressed and minoritized language does not have didactic resources for its teaching and learning as a second language. Nor as a mother tongue. There are some isolated and marginal materials that have been created in different spaces and moments, but they do not always correspond to Didza Xidza, the Zapotec language taught in this course. As it is known, Zapotec is a group of languages, so a material created in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is not functional for the teaching and learning of Zapotec from the Sierra. This creates problems for both the teacher and the student. The teacher lacks resources to teach the language and the student also lacks materials that allow him/her to practice, study autonomously and continue to develop proficiency in the target language.

Despite the difficulties involved in teaching Zapotec as a second language, the Zapotec Basic Course has been running for three years. So far 150 students have graduated from the first level. This year we launched the second level so that students can continue learning Zapotec. We are also planning to launch (in the long term) a virtual course that can be studied independently. In addition, teaching materials and resources for teaching and learning are being developed. This course has become one of the few, if any, options for learning Zapotec and one of the few places where one can develop the ability to teach Zapotec and gain experience as a teacher of Zapotec as a second language.
