In March, 1963, the project addressed itself to about 250 European libraries, academies, and archives selected from
The World of Learning in order to discover what manuscript material relevant to the development of quantum physics was already- deposited in places equipped to care for it. These institutions were sent a letter asking for information about the papers of the physicists whose names appeared on two lists accompanying the request. The first list was a register of the 125 deceased physicists whose papers were thought most likely to be of help in reconstructing the growth of quantum physics. The second, whose purpose was to reduce our request to more manageable proportions, contained only the names of those physicists on the general register who were active in the "region" of the institution addressed. (In the case of Academies, the "regional list" contained the names of former members.) In all, ten regional groupings were drawn up. The first item in this appendix is a specification of those regions; the second is the general register, keyed to indicate on which of the regional list(s) each name appeared.
The response to our request was most gratifying, over 60 per cent of the institutions addressed answering. Of these, 29 indicated holdings of relevant material, notice of which has been included, when appropriate, in Chapter II. The names of the institutions giving positive responses make up the third item in this appendix. The institutions are listed by region and, within each region, alphabetically by city. A given collection, in so far as it has been incorporated in Chapter II, can be reconstructed from the index entries under the name of the institution in question.
